BLEDISLOE CUP – QANTAS WALLABIES VS ALL BLACKS
The 2017 Bledisloe Cup
Sydney has always been a great location for some of the most exciting sporting events in the world. And Sydneysider’s love their sport, whether it be outdoor or indoor, the locals of Sydney love to cheer their favourite teams and players on, almost fanatically.
And in 2017 one of the greatest sporting events of the southern hemisphere kicks off at 8pm on August the 19th at the ANZ Stadium. It is the first match of the highly expected Bledisloe Cup, where two great sporting nations come head to head once again in Rugby Union.
The Wallabies of Australia take on the New Zealand All Blacks, and once again fireworks are predicted both on and off the pitch. These two heavyweight rugby nations have been consistently the best in the world for decades, and this sporting occasion is the very elite facing off against each other.
History Of The Bledisloe Cup
The Bledisloe Cup is competed by the Australian Wallabies and New Zealand’s All Blacks, and is one of the most fiercely contested Rugby Union series in the world. It is named after Lord Bledisloe, who was the Governor-General of New Zealand who donated the cup in 1931.
Although there is some doubt when the first match took place, it was probably in 1932 when the All Blacks toured Australia. The event was really hit and miss for the first fifty years, but the All Blacks won 11 matches to 3.
But since 1996, the Bledisloe Cup has been part of the Tri Nations tournament that has added South Africa into the equation. Since 2006, the Bledisloe Cup will once again be played for over a three match series and a clear winner will be found.
The 2017 Bledisloe Cup
The All Blacks go into the 2017 series with 14 consecutive victories under their belt, in fact the last time Australia won the Bledisloe Cup was in 2002.
This amazing statistic is hardly a surprise to rugby fans, as without doubt New Zealand are the most dominant and most successful team in the world, and have been so for many years.
They were unbeaten in New Zealand for over 45 consecutive matches until the British Lions toured earlier on in July this year.
The first match of 2017 will be at the fabulous ANZ Stadium in Sydney, before the series travels to the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin and the final match will be contested back in Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
